It sounds like complete, udder ass without my MXR 10 band EQ in the loop. Thin, extremely ice-picky, middy and a serious lack of bass. I have to completely cut the 250Hz, 2Khz and 4Khz on my EQ pedal to get rid of the ice pick highs and nasal mids.

I've pretty much ignored this for as long as I've owned the head because I use my MXR 10 Band EQ in the loop and it stays on whenever I play anyway, and sounds awesome with it on. But the fact that I NEED it on in order for it to sound good just doesn't sit right with me and doesn't make sense.

And I'm fairly certain it's not my tubes, because it sounded this way before my second set of tubes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it this way for both channels? Do the tone controls, presence, and resonance controls all work properly? Other than trying other tubes and checking bias I can't offer much help without seeing the amp. If there is an issue with the amp it would require tracking the problem down and doing testing until the problem is located. As always, check all the basics first. Try another cabinet, guitar, different cables, etc. to rule out all those things first.
There are no common problems I've seen that cause this.

Yeah it this way for both channels.

Tone controls work fine, resonance works fine, but presence does almost nothing until it's past 8, but that is apparently common.

This is my second set of tubes, and it sounded this way with my first set. I haven't checked the bias, maybe that's culprit? As for cabs, I tried it through my brothers Ampeg 8x10 and it still had the same sound characteristics. Both my guitars make no difference as well.

Maybe I got a lemon 6505+?
:(

I should mention that I did not have it biased when I put the new set of tubes in. You don't suppose it could be too cold? That would really make my day.

Also, upon taking the chassis out (just for a blind inspection) I noticed one of the fuses was sort of off its holders, I guess you could call it. So I slid it back into position. But a fuse wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it?

Fuse won't do it. Cold bias could have some effect, but it would have to be very cold. I would take the amp to a store and try it thru a standard Marshall cab with Celestion 75's or a 6505 cab and see how it sounds. From here I can't tell if the amp has an actual problem or it's just not the tone for you. I would try other guitar cabs and possibly have a tech check it over.
