Packing an Amp
Proper packing protects your amp and avoids repack fees. When in doubt, have UPS pack it.
Proper packing
- Double-box with enough packing material — newspaper is not adequate.
- Use sturdy cardboard that won't tear when bumped in transit.
- Inner box: amp tight with bubble wrap, cardboard, or Styrofoam.
- Outer box: 2–3 inches of packing so nothing shifts during shipping.
- Leave tubes in the amp. Tube shields and back covers installed.
- Protect footswitches so they can't be crushed by the amp.
- You don't need to send the power cord (IEC is fine unless it's special to that amp).
- Styrofoam peanuts: wrap the amp in a plastic trash bag first — peanuts get inside and make a mess.
- Box-in-a-box keeps peanuts out and reduces shifting. Cheap recycled cardboard tears too easily.
- Foam blocks, thick corrugated cardboard, or thick Styrofoam blocks work better than loose peanuts.
I've seen amps from UPS Stores packed poorly — watch them pack it if you can. The few dollars for professional packing beats a damage claim and repair hassle.
